This week’s photo: Man on the Great Wall

I bumped into this man while walking on the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu. We had just turned a corner and climbed up a few steps when he appeared out of nowhere. He was selling drinks, sweets and chocolate bars but he stood out because of his grin and Communist Party attire, complete with hat.

I hung around after buying a bar of Snickers from him and noticed that the uniform was a great marketing tool. He was very happy to be photographed and posed obligingly, and because of that people ended up buying something from him.

There are lots of vendors in the Mutianyu and Badaling sections of the Wall, so if you’re in need of refreshments, all you have to do is to look out for them. Just be prepared for some of them to jump out at you, just like this man did.

I remember panting up one stretch to come across a tablecloth seller waving fabric in my face – the last thing I was interested in at that stage!
