Unplugging on the Rocky Mountaineer

In a world where speed is everything, travelling has become a bit of a miracle. We hop on a plane, cross time zones and jet-lagged and tired, arrive in a new city. Our flights are over in a few hours and if we’re lucky, we get to see a few clouds. But is that really travelling?

This is where great rail journeys come in, particularly the Rocky Mountaineer.

If you love travelling at a slower pace, chances are you’ll also love train rides, which often turn out to be more enjoyable than flights. Regarded as some of the best rail journeys of the world, the Rocky Mountaineer’s routes through the Canadian Rockies and the Pacific Northwest will give you a real sense of how vast Canada is, taking you through mountain ranges, glacier-fed lakes and river canyons rich with wildlife.

Unlike many luxury train journeys, the Rocky Mountaineer offers daylight-only services. Overnight stops are made in Kamloops, Whistler and Quesnel, BC. The idea is to allow you to enjoy the scenery during the day and then sleep in a comfortable bed at night. Passengers are transferred between their hotels and trains at the start and end of each day’s journey.

Together with the overnight stops, destinations along the Rocky Mountaineer routes include Banff, Calgary and Jasper in Alberta. The destinations are rivalled by only one thing- the journey to get us there, made better by the three levels of service on board the trains.

There are three options: the GoldLeaf Service, SilverLeaf Service and RedLeaf Service. Meals are included on the Rocky Mountaineer but selections differ based on the service category. The two-level GoldLeaf coaches are the most luxurious- gourmet ‘a la carte meals are served in the lower level while fully domed windows in the upper level give passengers uninterrupted views throughout the journey.

If you’re hoping to escape from routine or a hectic work schedule, or simply looking for a great way to enjoy Canada, a ride on one of Rocky Mountaineer’s train journeys might just be the thing for you. Slowing down to travel is never a bad idea.

  1. I took the train from Toronto to Vancouver which covered part of the route of the Rocky Mountaineer. It was a fantastic way to see the changing beauty of such a vast country – all of which I would have missed had I flown. Fantastic service, beautiful country. I highly recommend it also!

Absolutely! That’s exactly why I love trains- you get to see more. It’s a slower form of travel, but much more fulfilling.
